Mary Lorson and Saint Low 's Realistic follows the same path as 2002's underrated Tricks for Dawn, featuring as it does achingly pretty and mostly melancholy songs with lush instrumentation and Lorson 's sweet but heartfelt vocals. Lorson and her ex- Madder Rose compatriot Billy Coté have improved on that record. The sound is richer and more interesting, the songs are hookier, and overall it is undoubtedly the best record that either of them has been involved in, which is saying something as Madder Rose released many very fine recordings

Singer/songwriter Mary Lorson is most known for her role in the indie rock outfit Madder Rose, the New York band she has fronted since 1990. In 1997, however, Lorson opted for a solo side, and three years later she assembled Saint Low and the band issued a self-titled release later that summer. Mary, a prolific songwriter, began working on her 8th release, Realistic, after the release of 2003's "Piano Creeps" a collection of atmospheric and evocative compositions penned with her partner Billy Cote.

The typical Mary Lorson song is a wistful piano ballad with introspective leanings; she adds interest with some unusual musical twists. The opener, Wait for the Sun, breezes along over a lightly swinging beat, while Spider deploys mysterious accordion and some faintly unsettling harmonies. The pleasant floating feel of These Days is enhanced by mellifluous wisps of pedal steel guitar. Eventually, though, the Lorson sound begins to grate with its repetitious agreeableness, and she could probably sit at the keyboard and plonk out nondescript filler like Walking Man until the cows come home.
