The Psychic Paramount is an American experimental rock group from New York City. The band was formed by guitarist Drew St. Ivany and bassist Ben Armstrong after the dissolution of Laddio Bolocko. Beginning with solo acoustic recordings by St. Ivany, they soon booked a European tour with a very short time to find a drummer. Finding Tatsuya Nakatani, the band had less than a week to practice before setting out for multiple shows in France and Italy.

each other but they only very rarely coalesce. I believe they have succeeded to finally fuse them all in their last album "II". The real miracle is that they absolutely didn't lose one bit of their energy nor an inch of their incredible grooviness (drummer Jeff Conaway is simply amazing), not even the length of most of their tracks. They also abandoned that over-saturated sound, they maybe realized that their sound is loud and powerful enough, if not more, in complete high-definition.

The Psychic Paramount. It's been almost six years since the Psychic Paramount's last album, Gamelan Into the Mink Supernatural. Normally a hiatus that long indicates a need to reform, retool, or in some way restart. But apparently this New York trio just gestated, growing their music into something wider, thicker, and harder to define. In huge jams that soar, crash, and smolder- often at the same time- the band pumps extra blood and muscle into their sound, as if stretching a balloon into a blimp. If you're familiar with Gamelan, you might wonder how the Psychic Paramount could make their sound any.

  • The Psychic Paramount have paved their careers with effects heavy guitar noise sounding like early Sonic Youth (à la Confusion is Sex) and your choice of God Speed. Though, as they show on this album, they can give beautiful structure to a seemingly improvised style of music. They take the free flowing and always changing tempos and riffs of God Speed, and format them into a much more psychedelic and, in some ways, more challenging set of songs. The challenge comes with the sheer power and noise the three piece group produces from song to song... this can be relentless at times, but will come as a pleasure to those willing and patient. To break the album down song by song wouldn't do justice to the nature of the album, but offer that the 11 minute "N6/Isolation" is an excellent example of the heights of emotions and technical proficiency (I'm referring to the drummer for the most part on that last remark) the group can reach. You can sense by listening to the album that their careers have lead to this one final set of songs. It comes off as a last ditch effort to put something into the world that they can consider their magnum opus... If so, they have succeeded.
