The Mood Elevator 's second album, Married Alive, sounds a lot like a Brendan Benson record. Maybe that's because the dude is all over the record. He's on drums, co-writes a bunch of songs, does background vocals, plays guitar, and produces the album. He and Mood Elevator 's main man, Chris Plum, were pals in high school, and Plum is a member of Benson 's backing band, the Wellfed Boys. As are all the members of the Mood Elevator

Mostly, Married Alive offers a slightly rowdier version of Benson's beloved pop/rock, a hybrid foot-tapper with more drum fills and distortion, but not quite as much beguiling charm. Whereas Benson's solo charisma has always been inextricably handcuffed to his genuine, sweet-faced whine, Mood Elevator's choice to skew a little rockier (read: big, Keith Moon-ish percussion and a splattering of expletives) has also cost the band its potentially appealing innocence.

The Mood Elevator is essentially Brendan Benson ’s Well Fed Boys with Benson taking on sideman duties and handing the mic to bandmate Chris Plum. Four years, two lineups and an EP later, The Mood Elevator has released its first full-length offering, Married Alive, a mix of Alex Chilton hooks and Stephen Malkmus deadpan that sounds much better in theory than it does on record. The album resonates with the sound of hedged bets, emotional double-backs and confused retreats from real life into a wall of noise erected for no other reason than to preserve the only stance Plum appears willing to take: when all else fails - rock!
