Boston is one of the best-selling albums of all time, and deservedly so. Because of the rise of disco and punk, FM rock radio seemed all but dead until the rise of acts like Boston, Tom Petty, and Bruce Springsteen. Nearly every song on Boston's debut album could still be heard on classic rock radio decades later due to the strong vocals of Brad Delp and unique guitar sound of Tom Scholz

  • "THE BASEMENT TAPES"BOSTON-BOSTON: That iconic guitar-as-spaceship cover art...TOM SCHOLZ' production perfection and multi-layered guitars...BRAD DELP's soaring, other-worldly vocals...it all added up to nothin' short of a sonic orgasm in 1976. New England's other big name rockers (AEROSMITH, J. GEILS, and THE CARS) also pumped out delicious debut albums in that decade, but unlike those groups, BOSTON shot their wad on the first try. Most tracks were virtually indistinguishable...in fact, many showed up AGAIN in thin disguise on the follow up disc DON'T LOOK BACK. The "band", such as it was, was plastered on the back cover mostly for show...control freak SCHOLZ basically created this juggernaut alone in his basement, calling on DELP only for vocals, the one department in which he was lacking. Even though every song garnered radio play, MORE THAN A FEELING, with its thumping LOUIE LOUIE riff, PEACE OF MIND's slick as hell groove, and the gradually building LONG TIME were the huge hits, spurring umpteen million album sales, in-fighting and inevitable backlash for the rest of their career. Such are the foibles of a rock and roll band.RATING: FIVE FOREPLAYS

  • Sometimes art transcends reality and this is one of those times. "Normal" people could not have produced a masterpiece such as this. These guys were in another world. The mix of perfect production, soaring vocals, incredible guitar work, and a slight tug at the heart strings place this as one of the greatest rock albums ever. Shame on allmusic.com for only giving it 4 1/2 out of 5 stars.

  • Great music, All tracks are amazing!!! Love the cover and the back cover. Is my favorite Boston album of all time

  • It's hard to review an album like this one. There were three perfect song s that were one side of a LP disc back "then". The other half wasn't even half as good as the first half but that first half was. Just. So. Good. No one who wasn't living through the hell that was the mid 70's pop music scene can really understand just how important the first Boston album was back then. The Punks would help, the metal heads would help. Hell, even fucking Fleetwood Mac would help. 1974 & 75 was really just that bad for American radio. And then, out of nowhere, on the radio was "More than A Feeling"And all you could think was "Thank God".

  • Melodic powerful rousing - top 100 album, melodic rock at its best. Must have in your collection. 5+++

  • How in the world this record doesn't get 5 stars is beyond me??????? Wow this should get 5 stars on production alone not even considering some of the most amazing vocal performances ever!!! This is one of the most amazing albums released in the 70's.

  • Tom Scholz may be a notorious perfectionist, but he's also an inventive alchemist and that's proven by Boston's eponymous debut album. Nothing else sounded quite like this in 1976 and none of the imitators that followed ever really managed to clone it. In the wake of Led Zeppelin's ongoing troubles at the time, album rock radio needed a new hero and this band were it. The second side of this LP is often forgotten due to the sheer unbridled brilliance of the first. 'More Than A Feeling' remains a staple classic rock anthem of radio, TV, film and various rock artist compilations; 'Foreplay' is a brief but fine workout of the group's progressive rock influences; the conjoined 'Long Time' is as much a showcase for Scholz' organ playing abilities as 'Feeling' was for his guitar prowess; 'Peace of Mind' closes out a trio of vocal masterclasses from the unmistakable voice of Brad Delp. Boston managed to master the art of openly courting both the album AND hit radio markets, this record flew off the shelves and until Guns N' Roses Appetite for Destruction emerged over a decade later, it was the highest selling debut of all time in America.

  • There is no more important album that changed the music industry than Boston. In 1976, Boston made what I still consider to be the greatest debut album from anyone ever made. Every single song plays like a greatest hits collection thanks to "The Boston Sound", a sound so epic that everybody started imitating it. None did it more perfectly than Boston though. More Than A Feeling is a masterful anthem, Foreplay/Long Time has a progressive outside yet a pop filled center that is excellent. Rock N Roll Band is one of the great songs in the Boston Catalog and Peace of Mind is one of the greatest songs ever made. If you never listened to the best debut album of all time, you owe it to yourself to listen right now. Perfection.5/5

  • This is just one of those albums that makes you happy seconds within listening. I put this album on one morning getting ready for school. I looked at the rising sun while thoss opening acoustic guitar notes played and thought about where I was in life, where I was going, who I was going to be... have I lived my life to its fullest or shall I go on wishing I could go back all the time? Oh yeah, then the chorus came in and I thought "Maybe it's all gonna be okay." More Than a Feeling describes, funnily enough, that exact feeling of sentimentality in its lyrics. How cool is that? Oh yeah, there are other songs too. Something About You picks up where that amazing first track left off later in the album and is a very underrated song. Long Time is simply a masterpiece of a rock song. Peace of Mind and Hitch a Ride are both great songs that showcase Tom Scholz's ability to write very vulnerable songs and just make them SO outstandingly good. Wanna rock? There's Rock n Roll Band and Smokin. This is truly one of the best albums ever made. And it was made in a basement. I'm gonna go make an album now.
