Roads to the North" is an album that demands time. It's not a short record, it finishes in the 72-minute mark, but it also demands many listens to absorb all its content. It's very dense with many instruments, great passages, riffs and fillings that the listener won't be able to get in his first couple of listens. Roads to the North is Panopticon's first release on Bindrune Recordings, a label most known for releasing dark, atmospheric and folk-themed music such as Wodensthrone's Loss, which is easily one of the best albums of the last decade. Although Panopticon still pays homage to its own Kentuckian past as it has done on previous albums, there's a hauntingly sorrowful Scandinavian vibe that occupies the album's core.

Kentucky was inspired not just by his experiences growing up in Louisville, but also looked directly to the instruments and traditional melodies of his home state's Appalachian folk tradition, melding the burning blastbeats and demonic growled vocals black metal is known for with woodsy fiddles, lamenting banjos, and spare woodwinds. Though possibly not the first time in the history of recorded music that Darkthrone-informed metal tunes had foggy mountain folk breakdowns, the combination was certainly uncommon, and even more surprising was how well it worked.

Through his black metal project Panopticon, he's released a series of albums that have gotten increasingly better with each new entry in the discography. Lunn's first release under the Panopticon moniker was a self-titled full length debut that combined atmospheric black metal with elements of shoegaze. This style of black metal is relatively common nowadays, but in 2008 there weren't many bands making this kind of racket. There are certainly still aspects of black metal present in Roads to the North, but this album is a nigh unclassifiable knot of styles. The album opening "Echos of a Dishoarmonic Evensong" begins with a blast of black metal fury, but it's augmented with a prominently featured fiddle. This same song also features melodic death and post-metal elements as well as a spastic guitar solo that encompasses several distinct styles of heavy metal.
