Graceland is the seventh solo studio album by American singer-songwriter Paul Simon. It was produced by Simon, engineered by Roy Halee and released on August 25, 1986, by Warner Bros. Following a successful but fraught reunion with his musical partner Art Garfunkel, Simon's marriage had fallen apart and his previous record, Hearts and Bones (1983), was a commercial failure. In 1984, after a period of depression, Simon became fascinated by a bootleg cassette of South African township music

The Story Of "Graceland" (As Told By Paul Simon) Lyrics. The "Graceland" story is a very interesting story in that it's a very good example of how a collaboration works, even when you're not aware of it occurring. The track is one of the early tracks because I only did five tracks in South Africa. On the sessions that I did with Forere, who is the accordion player – plays on "Boy in the Bubble" – we did a few other tracks. Brought it home, and I was trying to write to it. I would, you know, sing these lines about Graceland. Graceland, of course I wanted to get rid of the Graceland part because, I mean, what's Graceland got to do with South Africa or anything like that, so that's gotta go. It's a question of what I'm going to replace it with. But then I couldn't replace it with anything. I was always singing that.

Paul Simon – Graceland. Release date: 25th August 1986. On 31st January 1987, Paul Simon went back to N. on the UK album chart with ‘Graceland’, the singer-songwriters seventh solo album. The album brought Simon back to the spotlight, it stayed on the chart for a total 101 weeks and later won the 1987 Grammy Award for Album of the Year, while the title song won the 1988 Grammy Award for Record of the Year. Paul Simon is one of the most successful and respected songwriters of the second half of the 20th century.

Paul Simon‘s joyous, vibrant Graceland, released 30 years ago today, remains one of the most beloved albums in pop history. And also one the most controversial. Simon had ventured to South Africa to record the album with local musicians, ignoring an international boycott set in place by the United Nations Anti-Apartheid Committee. What gives the right to wear the cloak of morality? he railed at the time. As the album turns 30, here is the story of its creation as told through 10 little-known facts. 1. Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels was the patron saint of Graceland. A wealth of underrepresented people and cultures contributed to the innovative music Simon made on his 1986 masterwork, but there’s one figure who seldom gets recognized for his role in the Graceland odyssey. Surprisingly, the album probably never would have happened without television titan Lorne Michaels.

As the 25th anniversary celebrations build for the groundbreaking album, Robin Denselow recalls the huge controversy it caused. It was a plush affair for the mid-80s, an era when record sales had already begun to decline, and when music writers had already begun to reminisce about the good old glory days when lavish promotional parties and international flights were commonplace. On 27 August 1986, the Warner label hosted a major event at the Mayfair Theatre in London to mark the release of Paul Simon's adventurous new album, Graceland. We were given lunch, listened to the new work, and.

Ethan Zuckerman writes a great piece about how Paul Simon’s Graceland album came to be, with some of the historical context, backstory and being a xenophile. At its best, Graceland sounds like Simon is encountering forces to large for him to understand or control. He’s riding on top of them, offering free-form reflections on a world that’s vastly more complicated and colorful than the narrow places he and Art Garfunkel explored in their close harmonies. In Boy in the Bubble (video above), the chorus, These are the days of miracle and wonder, this is the long distance call could serve as a tagline for anyone confronting our strange, connected world. From Ethan Zuckerman)

When his Graceland tour hit Australia in the summer of 1987, Paul Simon found himself confronted anew with the controversial issues engendered by his working with South African musicians during the cultural boycott against apartheid. He gave a press conference on July 1 at which he defended himself, and the following day he summoned the prominent Australian music journalist Glenn A. Baker, who had recently written a flattering profile of him, for a one-on-one interview. This picture-disc LP chronicles those two events.
