About this album: The unconventional French composer Erik Satie almost wrote anti-music. In slow motion (and without bars) his well-known Gymnopédies glide past. In other pieces one can hear more than faint echoes form the vaudeville theatre. Played by Håkon Austbø. Starting with his first composition in 1884, he signed his name as Erik Satie. A colourful figure in the early 20th century Parisian avant-garde, he referred to himself as a "phonometrograph" or "phonometrician" (meaning "someone who measures (and writes down) sounds"), preferring this designation to that of "musician," after having been called "a clumsy but subtle technician" in a book on contemporary French composers published in 1911.

Klara Kormendi plays with a beautiful sensitivity and precision, bringing out the subtleties in Satie's music. Satie's gift was to find depth and emotional power in music that might at first seem slight and unimportant. Satie made timeless music from fleeting impressions and snatches of polular song, all brought together with humor and grace. Kormendi finds all this in the music, and brings it out for the listener as if effortlessly, perfectly suiting Satie's own naturalistic style.
