Recorded at Royal Festival Hall, London, 15 October 1980 as part of the BBC Symphony Orchestra's 50th Anniversary Season.

A) Child of Our Time. Michael Tippett Composer. Kenneth Woollam (ten). John Shirley-Quirk (bar). Gennady Rozhdestvensky Conductor. BBC Symphony Orchestra. Author: Arnold Whittall. Gennadi Rozhdestvensky, his successor as Chief Conductor, was more catholic, more tolerant, and this performance of A Child of Our Time reveals a wholehearted and positive response to the score that pays many dividends. The main dividend is dramatic intensity. It is a fast performance (see below) but for the most part the conductor moulds the music persuasively, aided by a confident chorus and orchestra and a strong if not uniformly polished team of soloists

A Child of Our Time is a secular oratorio by the British composer Michael Tippett (1905–98), who also wrote the libretto. Composed between 1939 and 1941, it was first performed at the Adelphi Theatre, London, on 19 March 1944. The work was inspired by events that affected Tippett profoundly: the assassination in 1938 of a German diplomat by a young Jewish refugee, and the Nazi government's reaction in the form of a violent pogrom against its Jewish population-called Kristallnacht.

Written in 1941, ‘A Child of our Time’ was Michael Tippett’s great anti-war statement; he wrote his own text describing man’s inhumanity to man, with its philosophical moments for chorus, and little dramatic episodes for four operatic soloists - although it’s the fine use of spirituals spread throughout the score that, for me, are the emotional and melodic highlights: ‘Steal. Years ago, I also picked up a BBC disc with a very good live performance from the late Gennady Rozhdestvensky, with soloists Helen Watts, Jill Gomez, Kenneth Woollam and John Shirley-Quirk.

A Child of our Time" offers music of rage, poignancy, and deep compassion. As the title itself implies, it is both specific to a certain time and place, and universal as well. Tippett, Michael, A Child of Our Time - Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Andre Previn. TOC of the extracted CD.
