1984" is a 1974 single by David Bowie, from his album Diamond Dogs. Written in 1973, it was inspired by George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four and, like much of its parent album, originally intended for a stage musical based on the novel, which was never produced because permission was refused by Orwell's widow Sonia.
The World of David Bowie.
Complete your David Bowie collection. It's Hard To Be A Saint In The City. I don't normally go for anthologies, particularly 'best ofs' and 'hits' - they can be disjointed to listen t. his collection of songs isn't weakened in that way. The selection hangs together well, spanning a breadth of songs within the titular period. And great to have Wild Is the WInd in any collection. The minimal cover leaves the music to stand on its own. I'm not sure what it is I don't like about the cover of the general release
One of those kids was David Bowie, who took inspiration from the Velvet Underground's dark Sixties explorations of bohemia's dark extremes. Bowie's work on the album forecast his own "Berlin period" and he'd have a huge hit a few years later covering The Idiot's "China Girl. He performed on two underrated gems, "Sector Z," which the band describe as a tongue-in-cheek tribute to Ziggy Stardust, and the pummeling album closer "Man Without a Mouth. He was so kind and down to earth," says Rustic frontman Dave Gutter. He was the best kind of rock star.
With his album 'Pin-Ups', Bowie paid tribute to his favourite bands of the previous decade by covering their songs. Released three years later, 'Wild Is The Wind' – formerly recorded by Johnny Mathis and Nina Simone – would have stuck out like Ziggy at a funeral on that LP. In Bowie's hands, the winsome, delicate track twists like a snake around a branch.
