Farewell Sorrow, Roberts' second solo departure from his band Appendix Out (which this album features members of), highlights his admiration of traditional Scottish folk music along with his involvement in the realm of indie pop, which served to transcend the '60s revival trend by pointing out the relevance and influence of traditional melodies within the annals of modern pop music.

Farewell Sorrow Lyrics. Raise me high, raise me high That I may see my fallen kindred seated Who met with death upon the battlefield Who, in the end, fell and were defeated. And the way they were tricked by death Betrayed, betrayed, leveled and mistreated I've stuck a knife in a man for less But Death is not so easily defeated. And you can pray, pray and pray for Life But know my friend, my dearest friend, please know this That Life is but Death's own right-hand man In every piece of his own left-hand business

Alasdair Roberts: Farewell Sorrow. Discovered in a Perthshire village by Will Oldham, Alasdair Roberts has a similarly dolorous worldview and shambolic charm. His voice is mournful, his richly melodic songs filled with slain kin, murderous gamekeepers and perfidious women ("you could not maintain your chastity," sniffs Come My Darling Polly, "even with the wearing of a girdle"). Perhaps the most original and exciting album to emerge from the British folk scene in years.

Farewell Sorrow opens with its remarkably strong title track, which sounds like one of the finest classic folk songs never written. Haunting and beautiful, "Farewell Sorrow" is impossible to place in time, as Roberts manages to deliver archaically worded sentences without sounding like a budget Yoda impersonator. In other words, he's found his voice, and all that remains now is for him to figure out what it is he wants to say.
