Steve Hobbs has long been one of the most talented if underrated vibraphonists around, and his playing recalls Bobby Hutcherson at times but also displays his own musical personality. On Spring Cycle, he performs five of his originals, three songs by pianist Bill O'Connell, and a couple standards. Performing with a core quartet including O'Connell, bassist Peter Washington, and drummer John Riley, Hobbs takes "On the Street Where You Live" and his own ballad "Jean" as showcases for the rhythm section.

Featured on this album are: Tom Harrell (trumpet and flugelhorn), Bob Maloch (tenor saxaphone), Dave Valentin (flute), Bill O'Connell (piano), Peter Washington (bass), John Riley (drums) and Steve Barrios (percussion). The lyricism and intensity of Tom Harrell (playing on 7 of 10 tracks) is well known and is complemented by Hobb's swinging style and original compositions.

One of the more talented vibraphonists to come up in the late '80s, Steve Hobbs' style is bop-based but fairly original. He studied at Berklee, the University of Miami, and the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, and freelanced in Denver for six years with such players as Tom Harrell, Joe Bonner, Spike Robinson, and Stix Hooper. Hobbs eventually moved back to Raleigh, where he works as an educator but keeps up an active performance schedule. He has recorded as a leader for Cexton, Timeless, and Candid.
