Now it follows that release with a two-disc set of Rameau’s complete cantatas – seven of them, with two versions of Aquilon et Orithie – and it is another fine effort that puts them at the very forefront of the youngest generation of practitioners of period-style performance. Gary Cooper, who directs from the harpsichord, shapes every phrase with a sure instinct and unfailing elegance, knowing exactly when to push the music onward, when to indulge his listeners, and his vocal team – Rachel Elliott, James Gilchrist, Roderick Williams and Thomas Guthrie – sing with the easy flowing lines and deft ornamentation that this lovely music demands.

Music from Ceremonial Oxford. Richard Goodson: Ormond's Glory, Janus did Ever. Matthew Locke: Harpsichord Suite. Still, I enjoyed myself immensely whilst listening to this music, which is very well interpreted by the New Chamber Opera Ensemble conducted by Gary Cooper. A genuine discovery then, and one which demands to be heard.

English conductor and classical keyboardist (harpsichord and fortepiano). In 1990, while still an organ scholar at New College, Oxford, he co-founded the New Chamber Opera, and conducted many of their performances. Between 1992 and 2000, he was a member of the baroque ensemble, Trio Sonnerie. He has also directed the Irish Baroque Orchestra, the Akademie für Alte Musik, Arion in Montreal, and was ‘Artist in Residence’ of the Belgian period instrument ensemble, B’Rock.

Gary Cooper is an English conductor and classical keyboardist who specializes in the harpsichord and fortepiano. He is known as an interpreter of the keyboard music of Bach and Mozart, and as a conductor of historically informed performances of music from the Renaissance, Baroque, Classical and Romantic periods.
