Marc Ribot ‎– Silent Movies. Label: Pi Recordings (2) ‎– PI34. This is a program of solo guitar music, performed with no overdubs or accompaniment except: Marc Ribot: Vibraphone (on Track 12), Keefus Ciancia: Soundscapes (on Tracks 1, 3, 7, 11, 13). Tracks 5 and 7 composed for "El General", a documentary film directed by Natalia Almada. Tracks 2, 8, and 9 originally composed for the motion picture "Drunk Boat".

On his third recording for the indie Pi Recordings imprint - home to some of the more exciting jazz recordings in the 21st century - guitarist Marc Ribot takes yet another turn in his prolific career. Silent Movies is a collection of 13 solo guitar pieces, recorded in complete takes with minimal sonic atmospherics added in overdub. The album was partially inspired by his experience of playing live as accompanist to a screening of Charlie Chaplin's film The Kid. Some of these tunes were composed for Natalia Almada's documentary El General and others for Drunk Boat (unreleased).

Silent Movies (2010). Marc Ribot - Silent Movies.

Marc Ribot’s Silent Movies doesn’t actually remind me of silent movies at all. The musical scores were, obviously, a major aspect of the silent era of film. They worked similarly to modern film scores in that they reflected (or paralleled) the mood of the images on the screen, but their role in the silent era was perhaps an enhanced one. They even served as an indicator of where the movie was from. Hollywood was milked with late romantic motifs and syrupy strings (some things don’t change). The album title is not necessarily in reference to the silent era of film itself, but instead a more playful interpretation by Ribot that explores the mind’s connection between sound and image. Some of these tracks are indeed meant to accompany images though. The Kid is an arrangement that Ribot created for a live accompaniment to the classic Charlie Chaplin film of the same name.

Amidst all the guitar heroes, face-melters and shred lords, Marc Ribot has risen to prominence as one of the more distinctive players. Well-versed in punk, New Orleans, soul-jazz, metal, down-home roots music, the avant-garde and just about everything else in the musical kitchen sink, Ribot taps into a brash mix of energy and humor that allows him to toy lovingly with tradition and genre. Virtually no overdubbing was done on the album, save for some stage-setting sound effects and a touch of vibraphone added to "The Kid," and this makes Ribot's technique all the more impressive. Natalia in Eb Minor" features some sharp feedback cries, but there is little else in the way of electronics. Much of the album is acoustic, rich with the sounds of sighs from strings and creaking from the fret board. Space and soft dynamics dominate.
