  • "Olé" marked somewhat of a change in direction for the once blues rock slinging pub band known as Sad Café. Faulty sales with 1980's self titled album signaled a change up, and with "Olé" a change up is given. The disc is influenced slightly by the likes of Pat Benatar and various new wave acts of the time. Sometime the product works and other times it's, to put it bluntly, pretty half baked. The album does show tons of talent, specifically Paul Young who commands you to listen. However, the band and compositions never seem to match his charismatic energy. The only track that 100% works would be the single "Misunderstanding" with it's driving chorus and tight verses. However, other numbers seem like old ground just recovered. The single "Follow You Anywhere" unsuccessfully tries to capture the same power balladry that served the group so well with "Everyday Hurts" in 1979. On it's own it's a decent little ballad, but it's very hard not to compare it to the big one. Tracks like "Love's Enough" and "L.A." show very decent signs of potential and a larger picture, but all you get is a four minute zoomed in version of a larger idea. Nothing ever reaches it's full potential. "Olé" isn't a bad record, I know I rag on it a lot, it's good on it's own. But in the context of "Misplaced Ideals" and "Facades" it's hard not to notice the drop of quality a bit. The next release, "Politics of Existing", would however show Sad Café in a mini renaissance. Another Note: A track that was sadly not on the original 1981 release title "Rat Race" is one of the best tracks from the sessions for "Olé". It eventually ended up as the B-Side of "Misunderstanding", but never the actual album until the 2008 CD reissue by Renaissance. Anyway, it's a great anthemic closer to the record with a touching vocal from Young.Final Rating-6/10Stand-Out Tracks-"Love's Enough", "Misunderstanding" and "Rat Race"
