referencing Sideshow Symphonies, CD, Album, RE, RM, SOM 100JC. Yet another excellent album by Arcturus. A bit different from their previous releases, but still very good. Two things that bother me appear in track 2: The mastering is screwed up-I need to turn up the volume every time I hear this song, then turn it back down when it's done-and there is a glitch at the end that I cannot ignore!

Sideshow Symphonies is the fourth studio album by the Norwegian avant-garde metal band Arcturus. It was released on 19 September 2005. It is the first to feature Simen "ICS Vortex" Hestnæs as the principal vocalist and Tore Moren as second guitarist, as well as the first Arcturus album released by Season of Mist.

Ah, Sideshow Symphonies, Arcturus’ last album that takes so much crap because Garm is not present. Well, if you actually listen to the album without Garm in your mind, you might enjoy it. Yes, Garm is one of the best vocalists in metal. Sideshow Symphonies wouldn't be their strongest effort even if you could hear the guitars, as it sort of feels like an EP of great mid-tempo metal stretched out to album length by all the filler, but it does an admirable job of persuading me that Arcturus' best work isn't necessarily behind them just because Homie G is.

Double jewel case with 'Sideshow Symphonies' on CD and 'Shipwrecked in Oslo' on DVD. Comes with 20 page booklet. Originally thought of as simply a black metal super group, Norway’s ARCTURUS, had the guts to incorporate traditional melody, keyboards, vocal experimental and melodrama into their sinister theatrics. With this fourth album originally released in 2005, they became the premiere progressive, avant-garde art band. Additional Information.

As far as Arcturus album titles go, "Sideshow Symphonies" is rather apt. "Symphonies" are in play in the sense that the music is deep in progressive realms with, as in the classic Sham Mirrors or La Masquerade Infernale, only hints of their earlier black metal style present (and these are buried deeper than ever). And "Sideshow" in the sense that this doesn't feel like a top-flight, main event level Arcturus album.

  • Norwegian collective Arcturus have been recognized as responsible of pushing intellectualism and professionalism in their local scene, but they weren’t the best in doing it (Dødheimsgard still exist, after all), though their companions Borknagar had done much worse around the time. Once starting mixing Neoclassical licks and progressions with Classic/Black Metal tremolo picking, they jumped into Gothic/Doom, modern Progressive Rock and Deftones/Tool Groove Metal fluency, but their albums ended more like dizzying cauldrons where improbable elements had been put forcibly in the name of “concepts”: since their themes were never as simple and understandable like Pink Floyd, Cradle of Filth and Cannibal Corpse, but more rooted in universal contradiction of the human mind and apocalyptic spacey imagery, we can’t really say they were essential. The band’s fourth album Sideshow Symphonies goes so curt and fluent among groovy swings (“Hibernation Sickness Complete”), Fates Warning cerebral snare games and multiple guitar sounds (“Shipwrecked Frontier Pioneer”), post-Doom sparse pace (“Deamonpainter”, “Hufsa”), quieter, drumless keyboard backings with resonant vocals (“Nocturnal Vision Revisited”) and crossed Dream Theater/In Flames patterns (“Moonshine Delirium). Most of the lyrics deal about persons drifting psychologically like malfunctioning space shuttles and witnessing bore and stupidity all over: this is more evident on “White Noise Monster”, where ICS Vortex laments unnerving noise and a horrible living places as causes of stress. The production is clean, processed and functional without sounding totally plastic, but a mastering error results in the first track sounding louder than the rest of the album. As with the band’s previous albums, Sideshow Symphonies is hardly genius. Though the band attempts at sophisticated songwriting and full, functional arrangements, the relying of groove over melody and immediacy results in a bunch of tracks that don’t suggest listening to them more than once after some time. Not special, though there are still moments of brilliance on some tracks.Highlights: “Hibernation Sickness Complete”, “Moonshine Delirium”.
