Johannes Brahms ' two string quintets are late works, composed respectively in 1882 and 1890. Like other pieces from the last decade of Brahms life, they hold deep secrets that reveal themselves only slowly, over repeated hearings. They may in fact be tougher nuts to crack than the structurally similar clarinet pieces from the same period, for the dense, undifferentiated string quintet texture demands especially close attention

Here they collaborate with Britain’s greatest living viola player, Lawrence Power, who with his long association with The Nash Ensemble among others has also proved himself a remarkable chamber musician

Brahms’s String Quintets (Opp 88 and 111) both represent landmarks of the Romantic chamber music repertoire, and demonstrate the composer’s utter mastery of the genre. Composer: Johannes Brahms Performer: Lawrence Power Orchestra/Ensemble: Takács String Quartet. These fine performances make a strong case for them

The Takács Quartet and Lawrence Power are a dream team on two of Brahms's finest chamber works, writes Fiona Maddocks. The soaring, optimistic opening of Brahms's String Quintet No 2 in G major, Op 111 is one of the great moments in chamber music: upper strings, enriched with the addition of a second viola, shimmer and quiver, while the cello utters a plunging, jumping melody in G major. This mood of excitement continues, with a magnificent, lyrical violin tune, almost without let-up – a wistful, minor key second subject notwithstanding – to the end of this long, burgeoning first movement

Performer: Takács Quartet; Lawrence Power (viola). Here are two works that ought to be valued alongside Brahms’s Piano and Clarinet Quintets. The Second String Quintet, particularly, is one of his most admirable and lovable large-scale works. But it’s also as challenging interpretatively as any of the Symphonies. So when this Quintet is performed or recorded, it’s rarely with the depth of understanding it needs. Fortunately, the Takács Quartet and Lawrence Power show every indication of having given a lot of thought to both works. Everything sounds as though it has been thought through extensively.
