Motet Beatus quem elegisti. Le Concert Spirituel Choeur et Orchestre Hervé Niquet, director. This requiem became one of the most popular works in 18th century France, being performed for Rameau's death in 1764 and for Louis XV's ten years later. Making it stand out from other pieces in the genre is Gilles' use of sensibilité to produce orchestral effects which might be called pre-Romantic if they weren't so utterly French Baroque. The motet (1701) is a much more seductively Italian-type work, with plenty of ear-catching devices to help illustrate its psalm text.

Le Concert Spirituel. Jean Louis Paya, Hervé Lamy, Peter Harvey, Jean-Paul Fouchécourt, Véronique Gens. Gilles, Jean: Beatus Quem Elegisti. Le Concert Spirituel.

Jean Gilles’s Requiem Mass is reputed to have been sung at his own funeral – he died in 1705 at the age of only 37 – following its rejection by its original commissioners, the offspring of important deceased city officials in Toulouse where the composer served as maître de choeur. Had he lived longer, who knows what more he might have achieved. Works: Requiem; Beatus quem elegisti. Performer: Véronique Gens (soprano), Jean-Paul Fouchécourt, Hervé Lamy (tenor), Peter Harvey, Jean-Louis Paya (bass); Le Concert Spirituel Choir & Orchestra/Hervé Niquet. Beatus quem elegisti. Jean Gilles Composer. Hervé Niquet Conductor. Véronique Gens (sop). Jean-Paul Fouchécourt (ten). Jean-Louis Paya (bbar). Le) Concert Spirituel Orchestra. Le) Concert Spirituel Chorus. Jean Gilles may not be a well-known name, but his Requiem of 1705 was once one of the most admired works in France, considered the best of its kind over a period of some 70 years and performed at the funerals of Rameau and Louis XV. This may strike the modern listener as hard to believe, since this is in places an oddly sunny kind of Requiem, with none of the sense of fear and dread that we have come to associate with the office post-Mozart, Berlioz and Verdi.
