Hearing Discharge in their embryonic stages is an odd experience. On the one hand, the line between the raucous punk rock of Realities of War and the grinding, harsh d-beats of Hear Nothing See Nothing Say Nothing is a clear one, but at the same time, it is still astounding to see how much they progressed in 2 years. The sound Discharge are going for here is an energetic, quickened and crunchy variety of punk rock, something that may be called 'street punk', but with more ballsy riffs.

In 1980, Discharge signed with Clay Records, and recorded their first single Realities of War in February 1980, which made the UK Indie Chart when it was released in April, after being played on John Peel's show, peaking at number 5 and spending 44 weeks in the chart. The band also performed their first shows outside of Stoke-on-Trent in 1980, playing in Leicester, Preston and Glasgow. Discharge's seventh studio album, End of Days, was released on April 29 through NUCLEAR BLAST RECORDS and was a return to their classic sound much to the fans approval. END OF DAYS entered the Official UK Rock Charts at and on the UK Indie Charts. The new album was very well recieved and the success of the album saw the band touring Europe and the USA along with EYEHATEGOD and TOXIC HOLOCAUST playing to sold out crowds.

Realities of War being the first EP and recorded release for the band was created sometime in 1980. Being a fan of a diverse range of punk styles it’s actually no surprise this crossed my music hungry eyes by accident, a surprise of the internet. Now as I have discovered surprises of the internet are often mixed bags and when it comes to music beauty is in the ears of the beholder. Opening with the title track a soft drum fill breaks way for a flurry of crunchy power chords. The vocals, while nothing you haven’t heard before, retain a sincere and energetic quality essential in punk music. So that, to sum it up quickly, is the Realities of War EP. The songs are short, raw and suffer from production values I’m sure every other early punk band now looks back upon. The highlight would have to be a tossup between the overall drumming and the few oddball guitar solos tossed around.
