Brad Mehldau Trio / Brad Mehldau - Where Do You Start album download
The companion piece to Brad Mehldau's other 2012 album, the all-original Ode, Where Do You Start features the pianist's trio covering material by other artists. Also featured, however, are some choice jazz standards with Clifford Brown's "Brownie Speaks" and Sonny Rollins' "Airegin. Joining Mehldau here are his longtime cohorts bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Jeff Ballard.
Brad Mehldau and his usual companions deliver the goods once again with some really high quality performances. Soothing, challenging and interesting interpretations of more or less known compositions makes this session (recorded in the same studio and period as Ode, this album’s self-composed counterpart) worth listening to if you’re into the harmonic potential of the piano. I must confess that I'm not an avid fan of this or that "best", nevertheless this year's best track probably is Brad Mehldau Trio's "Holland". That track alone is worth getting this excellent album. Alongside "Jam" (the bass is insanely good) and the cover of . 's "Hey Joe", that brings back vivid childhood audio memories.

It is hard keeping pace with Brad Mehldau’s relentless activity. In the past two years alone he has released the lengthy, slightly insipid double disc set Highway Rider, an outstanding live solo piano set (admittedly recorded back in 2006), another live recording with jazz legends Lee Konitz, Charlie Haden and the much missed Paul Motian, a duo collaboration with classical pianist Kevin Hays and this year two brand new albums with his longstanding. In contrast to this year’s earlier Ode, Where Do You Start largely focuses on interpretations, both from within and beyond the jazz tradition. In spite of its pristine recording quality and some typically outstanding playing, Ode felt oddly dynamically flat.
Hot on the heels of Brad Mehldau's Ode (Nonesuch, 2012)-the pianist's first all-original set with his current trio-comes Where Do You Start, culled from the same recording sessions but, with the exception of one Mehldau tune, all cover material. This isn't the first time Mehldau has split a particularly fruitful session down the same compositional line: Anything Goes (Warner Bros. and House on Hill (Nonesuch) were both same from the same sessions, recorded with original drummer Jorge Rossy before he left the trio to return to Spain.

Brad Mehldau moved to New York City in 1988, studying at the New School and playing in a number of different combos-including a stint in label mate Joshua Redman’s quartet-before becoming a bandleader himself.
Mehldau followed the genre-bending album with the standards-based Anything Goes and Live in Tokyo in 2004, with Day Is Done arriving the following year. In 2006, he released House on Hill as well as Love Sublime, the latter with soprano vocalist Renée Fleming on Nonesuch Records. Mehldau chose to work with his trio plus Pat Metheny on Quartet in 2007; he followed it up with the double-disc Live in 2008, which was recorded with his trio at the Village Vanguard. A year later, the Brad Mehldau Trio released two studio albums with the all-original Ode and a companion collection of cover songs, Where Do You Start.
