No matter how much one may revere Josef Suk's masterful stereo recordings of Martinu's violin concertos, one must admit that with the release of this coupling of the two works by Bohuslav Matousek, those performances have found a worthy digital rival. Like Suk, Matousek has a lean but supple tone, a strong but sinuous line, and a keen sense of rhythm. And like Suk, Matousek grasps Martinu's individualistic blend of emotional intensity and rhythmic dexterity.

Temporarily out of stock. These violin concertos are typically elegant works by the great Czech composer Bohuslav Martinu. Thanks to Hyperion for its series the Complete Music for Violin and Orchestra by Martinu, of which this is the fourth and final volume. These concertos were recorded in 2001 and 2004 by violinist Bohuslav Matousek and the Czech Philharmonic, led by Christopher Hogwood. The performances, recordings and packaging are all outstanding. Martinu's "Concerto for Violin, No. 2 (29'07 - 1943) was thought to be his only violin concerto for many years

Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, Christopher Hogwood. Hogwood developed a passion for Martinů’s music while a student in Prague in the 1960s, as is evident at every stage in this wide-ranging collection. BBC Music Magazine, April 2019, Mor. elease Date: 1st Feb 2019. Catalogue No: CDS44611/4. The works recorded in this set-Martinu’s complete output for solo violin and orchestra, including compositions with other solo instruments. He seems most at home in the earlier, baroque-inflected concerto grosso style pieces such as the Duo concertante for two violins, but he also has a firm grasp of the symphonic fibre in the bigger-boned works.

1 and 2. Bohuslav MatouSek, violin; Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, Christopher Hogwood, cond. These concertos have interesting histories. Both were commissioned by great violinists: the first in 1931 by Samuel Dushkin, while he and Martinu (1890-1959) were living in Paris; the second in 1943 by Mischa Elman after Martinu's emigration to New York. Dushkin, accustomed from his collaboration with Stravinsky to influencing composers in violinistic matters, found that Martinu, himself a violinist, was less open to his advice, causing some friction between them.
