As is frequently the case with Shostakovich, the First Cello Concerto and Ninth Symphonies heard on this Artek album provide sharp contrast. On the one hand, there's the despondent, oppressive, even aggressive Cello Concerto. The Seattle Symphony, conducted by Gerard Schwarz, and cellist Lynn Harrell provide technically brilliant performances of both works, which bring contrast to the fore.

Album · 2011 · 14 Songs. Cello Concerto No. 1 in E-Flat Major, Op. 107. By Dmitri Shostakovich. 21b. By Anatol Konstantinovich Liadov - Gerard Schwarz & Seattle Symphony. 14 Songs, 1 Hour 19 Minutes.

Lynn Harrell and the Shostakovich Cello Concerto N. are one of the most engaging combinations of Cello solo playing since Rostropovich. Actually I don't think Rosty had as much fun as Harrell does as he shows us how much fun this concerto is. Even the "deep" second movement has a certain jauntiness brought to the searing beauty. The Shostakovich Symphony N. was written in 1945 in the wake of World War II. Here the Seattle Symphony Orchestra under Gerard Schwartz play Shostakovich's most joky symphony inspired by Haydn. The Musical Snuff Box is playful and fun, but the jewel of the set is Kikimora - operatic in nature, with a gorgeous English Horn solo. The Ballade is also wonderful and flowing and alive, and it is easy to understand why Liadov's music is among some of the most respected. It is a shame that his music is not heard more often, at least here in the West.
