Having recorded one album with the Haynes Boys on Slab and a solo album in 1998 ( Special 20 ) on his own Heathen label, singer/songwriter Tim Easton comes of age here with a mature, affecting, and charmingly eclectic solo turn for the more established (but still scrappy) New West label. It's a great achievement. His sound draws deeply on rootsy Americana, with acoustic slide guitar and twangy pedal steel emerging occasionally from the background and upright bass holding things down below. The presence of several members of Wilco contributes to the generally rootsy feel, too.

Tim Easton is an American guitarist and singer-songwriter playing rock and roll, folk and Americana music. Easton was raised in Akron, Ohio, forming the band Kosher Spears while at college. He traveled abroad for a time, busking in London, Paris, Spain, Italy, Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, and Ireland. On his return to the US in the mid-1990s, Easton joined the Haynes Boys with Freddie Free (guitar), Jovan Karcic (drums), and Aaron Rice (bass).

Tim Easton Break Your Mother's Heart. Tim Easton Ammunition.

Alt-country devotees ought to rejoice over the release of Tim Easton's solo debut. Backed by three-quarters of Wilco - bassist John Stirrat, drummer Ken Coomer and t Jay Bennett - Easton is a raspy-voiced songwriter of considerable talent. Front to back, this album is consistently strong. Junkyard percussion sounds drive the catchy "Downtown Lights," while "Happy Now" comes off like a chance encounter between Steve Earle and Matthew Sweet

Carry Me Get Some Lonesome I Would Have Married You Half a Day Downtown Lights. Happy Now Don't Walk Alone Soup Can Telephone Game Conversation Out of Your Life.

Tim Easton's solo album, the mostly acoustic Special 20 (Heathen, 1998), is no less eclectic, inventive and exuberant. Easton rants his way through blues (Help Me Find My Space Girl), honkytonk (Just Like Home), rock and roll (Torture Comes To Mind), and folk-rock (Troublesome Kind and All The Pretty Girls Leave Town), but, again, the standout track may be the least orthodox, the almost psychedelic Neil Young-ian Everywhere is Somewhere.
