Adventure Other Times & Places. Riccardo Muti, Philadelphia Orchestra. Prokofiev: Symphony No. 1 "Classical"; Symphony No. 3 "The Fiery Angel".

The album begins with Prokofiev Symphony 3, which includes music adapted from an opera he wrote. As charming as Prokofiev's First Symphony is, his Symphony 3 is quite a different matter, and a very serious one, indeed. The 1st movement begins loudly and ominously. Melodic lines are encoded within the texture of the music. But in 1929, he cobbled music materials from the opera together for what would be his Symphony No. 3 In C Minor, which is sometimes known by that opera’s name. In terms of the Classical Symphony, though the orchestra had recorded this on at least two occasions under Ormandy (in 1959 for CBS/Sony, and again in 1972 for RCA), they do put in another fine performance of this work, which now (approaching its 100th anniversary, in 2017) is very much a warhorse. And fine performances like this one show why this work is a warhorse to begin with.

Sergei Prokofiev began work on his Symphony No. 1 in D major (Op. 25) in 1916, but wrote most of it in 1917, finishing work on September 10. It is written in loose imitation of the style of Haydn (and to a lesser extent, Mozart), and is widely known as the Classical Symphony, a name given to it by the composer. It premiered on April 21, 1918 in Petrograd, conducted by Prokofiev himself, and has become one of his most popular and beloved works.
