Stokowski's Beethoven Sixth is also notable for another reason: his peculiar choice of tempo, particularly in the second movement. At more than 16 minutes, this recording represents of the slowest renditions of the Scene By the Brook in the recorded literature. Also on this CD is an interesting lecture given by Stokowski on Beethoven's imitation of the sounds of nature in the symphony.

TITLE added to MP3 cart. Beethoven: Symphony No. 6, - Liszt: Three Hungarian Rhapsodies. The Liszt Hungarian Rhapsodies are quite pleasant bonuses, but the major work on this CD is Stokowski's magnificent performance of Beethoven's Pastoral Symphony - the finest performance of this masterpiece I have ever heard. It is one of the dozen or so greatest performances of any work I have ever heard.

Beethoven: Symphony "Pastoral"; Liszt: Hungarian Rhapsodies "Sounds of Nature" chat with Stokowski. Even though the "Sounds of Nature" is a dated, hokey bit where the 'stream' sounds like water running down a drain (but I am told it is from tapes of the real thing). This is the finest performance I know of this piece, even better than Bruno Walter's magnificent recording. Some people have complained about the length of the second movement but I find it just right. THE ETERNAL MAGICIAN - George Enesco: Rumanian Rhapsodies & 2; Claude Debussy: Nocturnes; Igor Stravinsky: Firebird Suite. HIS SO. Richard Wagner: Ride of the Valkyries. All-American Youth Orchestra. The most interesting piece on this release is the Enesco Rhapsody I'd not heard it since parting with the Quintessence LP years ago. It full of invention and music that is just plain engaging.

The three Hungarian Rhapsodies (logical couplings, right?) are wonderful, vintage Stokowski–totally reorchestrated, rhythms pulled about like taffy, boatloads of glitz and glamour–and it’s all about as authentic as a fluorescent velvet portrait of the Hungarian countryside. You’ll love it. The sonics are quite good mono for the early ’50s, a bit flat in terms of dynamics, but clear and relatively free of distortion. LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN - Symphony No. 6 "Pastoral" FRANZ LISZT - Hungarian Rhapsodies Nos. 1-3. Stokowski, Leopold (conductor).
