Emerging from the Muscle Shoals music scene of the 1960s, Dan Penn and Spooner Oldham wrote an incredible number of Southern soul, pop, and rock classics, most of them in the span of a couple years, and since they generally weren’t the ones cutting these gems in the studio, it’s sometimes difficult to grasp just how good and varied this. songwriting team’s talents actually were.

Sweet Inspiration does a bang-up job of assembling the key songs Dan and Spooner wrote together during the 1960s and early 1970s. We haven’t always chosen the obvious versions, so there will be some nice surprises here for even the most avid collectors

Songwriters Dan Penn & Spooner Oldham wrote so many classic tracks that no one disc will cover everything, but "Sweet Inspiration" delights from start to finish. The set opens with "Out of the Blue" that mesmerized me when I first heard it on John Fred & his Playboy Band's 60s album Agnes English. Percy Sledge's version milks the soul and polishes this delicious song of love & longing  . I got to work side by side with both Penn & Oldham in Memphis for a couple of years from 1970 and learned so much about songwriting and recording from them (especially Dan because he signed me as a staff songwriter).
