It brings a major difference from albums such as Dança Das Cabeças in the sense that the musical themes are delivered in a more direct manner, while Dança was more ambiguous. From the excellent music of this album, the d bass solo of "Orixás" and the beautiful theme "Forrobodó" can be mentioned.

  • Zigzag came out in 1996. I love this album and have played it hundreds of times. For me it is Gismonti's best. I love the way it was recorded- you can hear Gismonti breathing heavily as he plays giving the music a more personal feeling. I can remember back then I was disappointed with a DownBeat review which basically dismissed the album as pretentious. To me it's Gismonti's most heartfelt and deeply personal release. That DownBeat review compared it to John Fahey-that is senseless-Fahey's music was very much drenched in delta blues-his style is more primitive and simple. Gismonti's playing on this record is more complex-beautiful chords and dissonances Fahey would not have gone near. I love Fahey but Zigzag is something else entirely. The album is four or five guitar pieces accompanied by a double bass player and a second guitarist. It closes with one of Gismonti's piano pieces. In the middle approximately is one short wacko piece that breaks up the tension of the more elegaic pieces. During a period of intense insomnia I used to play this album back to back with Reich's Music for 18 musicians. Great late night music.
