You Can't Laugh All the Time is one in a very long string of competent but ultimately banal cock rock records to involve the engineering skills of Steve Albini, whose presence is a mark of moderate quality, but doesn't say much about the project as a whole. The Austin band rips through its sludgy rock, using a typical combination of punk aggression, post-grungy guitar work, and riff-heavy metalesque constructions, but while this turgid, hammering sound may be on top of its game at most points, its lack of innovation leaves it rehashing familiar ground.
