Not every guitarist is brave enough to follow in the footsteps of Clarence White, but there are exceptions. Sandy Rothman and Steve Pottier, both fine guitarists in their own right, decided to team up for 16 instrumentals on Bluegrass Guitar Duets. Many of these tunes, like "Weeping Willow" and "Black Mountain Rag," will be familiar, but even the oldest warhorses are given fresh workouts here. In the Pines" has a lovely bluesy quality, while "Blue Guitar Yodel" pays homage to the late great Jimmie Rodgers.

Backup work is as tasteful as the inventive leads are, and the two clearly respect the music and each other's contributions to this inventive collection. The playing is as fresh today as it was on the 1991 recording date. Interestingly, Vern Williams version can be found on the on the album "Hand-Picked: 25 years of Rounder Bluegrass" under the tiltle "When Springtime Comes Again". Although this is not a learning or practice tape, I highly recommend this album as fun way to learn new tunes and licks. There are no vocals- this recording is strictly instrumental. The styles range from fiddle tunes to gospel, Jimmy Rodgers to the aforementioned Stephen Foster, bluesy to folksy- but all picked with taste and variety.

Brian Godchaux & Sandy Rothman have released a new video, created by Dutch mandolinist and photographer Theo Van Trier, using audio from one of the tunes on Brian and Sandy’s new album of banjo/fiddle duets, The Red Fiddle & The Silver Banjo, against a montage of lovely photos. The tune they have chosen is Sail Away Ladies, one that bluegrass and old time musicians alike are wont to play, which is given a stately rendition here by the two noted west coast pickers

Brian godchaux & sandy rothman the red fiddle & silver banjo: fiddle and banjo, the long form. Tone Bar Records TBR-980. From time to time, we’re treated to a recording of banjo/fiddle duets. For folks who play these instruments, these recordings hold a special interest. The interplay of this format goes all the way back to the mountains. For most bluegrass fans of a certain age or experience level, the standard for this format are with those fine duets between Earl Scruggs and Paul Warren.
