rendition Franklin's low bass plays a prominent role in the background, and the Temptations' harmonies are heavenly. Two other cuts, "The End of Our Road," and "What It Is," are indistinguishable remakes. Smooth Sailing" led by Damon Harris, is an upbeat tune about being in love that lacks bite and is saddled with adolescent lyrics.

Solid Rock is a 1972 album by The Temptations for the Gordy (Motown) label, produced by Norman Whitfield. Frustrated by conflicts and fights with Temptations Otis Williams and Melvin Franklin, and producer Whitfield's steadfast insistence on producing psychedelic soul for the group when they really wanted to sing ballads, Kendricks had quit the act and negotiated a solo deal with Motown's Tamla label.

Solid Rock (1972) is The Temptations’ first album made primarily without founding members and original lead singers Eddie Kendricks and Paul Williams. It is a masterful LP of righteous trippy soul, recorded during the height of The Temptations’ strong association with Norman Whitfield. The album includes songs such as; Take a Look Around, Stop the War Now, and Superstar (Remember How You Got Where You Are), as well as a cover of Ain’t No Sunshine. The arrangements are super funky, with spacey effects, rumbling bass and fuzzy guitars

  • It's not quite rock n' roll, but 'Solid Rock' certainly has a punchier sound than the preceding album in spots. The two most important numbers here are 'Superstar' and 'Take a Look Around', with the former being an attack on Ruffin and Kendricks. The latter was a moderate hit in the US, but making it all the way to #13 in the UK. They're both enjoyable, among the best singles the group ever released, though in different ways. 'Superstar' is a hard hitting funk tune and 'Look Around' is a thoughtful meditation on drugs and street life reminiscent of Curtis Mayfield. Damon Harris, replacing Eddie Kendricks, sounds a lot like him and has a wonderful voice in his own right. Richard Street can't quite replace the earthy baritone of Paul Williams, but his voice is smooth and has power to boot. Another beautiful track is 'It's Summer', originally lead by Melvin Franklin on 'Psychedelic Shack', which is completely redone with Dennis Edwards, Street and Franklin alternating vocals. It was even released as a single, though it failed to even crack the top 50. Unforunately, there's quite a bit of ho-hum material here as well that keeps 'Solid Rock' from being a truly great album. 'Smooth Sailing (From Now On)' is particularly shocking, a re-write of 'Too Busy Thinking About My Baby' from 1966, which itself is an inferior version of the song to Marvin Gaye's, released three years later. Obviously, it sounds incredibly dated and the lyrics are lackluster: Damon Harris' voice deserved better. Ditto for Richard Street on 'The End of Our Road', which sounds like it could be a good song, but doesn't go anywhere. 'What It Is' is fun but not much more than that. Thankfully, there's a couple of other good tunes to even things out: a version of 'Ain't No Sunshine' that isn't anything particularly special, but the vocal talent of the group makes things interesting, and 'Stop the War Now', an Edwin Starr song that is incredibly ambitious, but as usual Normal Whitfield's production (the track is 12 minutes long) might test your patience or turn you off completely. 'Solid Rock' is a step up from 'Sky's The Limit', but the Temptations were still one album away from achieving great commercial and artistic heights again.

  • Growing up I always believed that I love the Temps, in 1976 when Wings of Love released, I came to know that I loved Norman Whitfield in fact, the truth is, I love Whitfield's work regardless of who performed it, I followed his name all over bands and albums, his name in any album cover, simply means you are in for a treat, I never understood what Otis Williams meant by his statements, about Whitfield's music, I was devastated when I heard a Song for you album, the first Temptations release after Whitfield's departure, The Temps sounded like The Commodores it was a huge set back from their last collaboration with N Whitfield 1990. May his soul rest in peace, the soul of Melvin, Damon, R Street, D Edwards, Ruffin and Kendricks.
