Defector is the fourth studio album by English guitarist and songwriter Steve Hackett, released in June 1980 on Charisma Records. After touring in support of his previous album, Spectral Mornings (1979), Hackett took his band into Wessex Sound Studios to record a follow-up. Many Hackett fans consider this, to be the last album from his classic solo period.

  • Steve Hackett's fourth solo album, "Defector" is a strong companion to his prior album "Spectral Mornings". Features some strong songwriting on the first half of the album; the anthem "The Steppes", a foray for Steve's guitar prowess "Slogans", beautiful instrumental "Jacuzzi", but then the album falls a bit flat after "Jacuzzi". Regardless, this album is a wonderful solo release that is further distancing himself from his former bandmates in Genesis and forming a niche for himself as an innovative guitarist and composer.

  • Really solid album. A departure from Spectral Mornings in places but excellent songs end-to-end. To classify Hackett as 'Prog' is kind of unfair given the baggage it carried when this was produced. But not now - it's a given that Prog influenced punk, art rock, noise rock and metal, Nonetheless I think of Steve more as an art-rock, avant-garde artist given the scope and excellence of his work. Love this album. Four Stars simply because the album that preceded it was so unique.
