You call this klezmer? In this exciting CD, four trombones, a clarinet, a mandolin, and an in-your-face rhythm section streak from Eastern Europe to New Orleans, juggling Naftule Brandwein, Woody Guthrie, John Philip Sousa, and Professor Longhair. Genre: World: Klezmer. OK, so it’s not exactly the klezmer that your grandparents’ grandparents would have remembered from the old country. But they would have loved to hear a wailing clarinet leading into a Benny Goodman-like rendition of Bai Mir Bistu Sheyn, which in turn leads to a dizzying contrapuntal layering of Bai Mir with It Ain’t Necessarily So, Puttin’ on the Ritz, and ‘Mein Herr.

Dor L'Dor Not Your Father's Klezmer Band. Four trombones? Brandwein and the Beatles? Bai Mir Bistu Sheyn accompanied by Puttin’ on the Ritz ? Welcome to the sometimes frenzied, sometimes tender, sometimes playful-but always fresh and exciting-sound of Dor L’Dor. The band originally consisted of Ken (clarinet, saxophones, shofar) and Susan (piano, arrangements) their sons Michael (bass trombone, euphonium) and Daniel (bass), their daughter Rachel (tambourine, vocals), and Ken’s brother Steve (drums). They were joined by another talented young man, Brandon Armstrong (bass, acoustic guitar, and trombone), who helped make possible the band’s characteristic two (and sometimes three, or even four)-trombone sound. We’ve been extremely fortunate as our second, third, and subsequent Dors have come of age.

My father was a commanding presence on the bima. When he sang he would often send shockwaves through the eardrums of the choirboys who stood near hi. .There was a bit of the actor in hi.he was also down-to-earth, a great story-teller, and often quite comic (album liner notes, 1980). Cantor Bargad went on to serve at Temple Emanuel in Chelsea, MA until his death in 1968.
