Il tabarro (The Cloak) is an opera in one act by Giacomo Puccini to an Italian libretto by Giuseppe Adami, based on Didier Gold's play La houppelande. It is the first of the trio of operas known as Il trittico. The first performance was given on 14 December 1918 at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. Place: A barge on the Seine in Paris. It is close to sundown in Paris, and the stevedores work unloading Michele's barge.

Il trittico: Il tabarro. I-Catalogue NumberI-Cat. Giuseppe Adami (1878-1946). Grove Music Online : "Late in 1921 Puccini replaced Michele’s original apostrophe to the Seine (‘Scorri, fiume eterno’) with a brief, tauter monologue, strictly concerned with the action (‘Nulla! Silenzio’), which thereafter became definitive. Operas by Giacomo Puccini.

Il Tabarro Dramma in un atto di Giuseppe Adami Da La Houppelande di Didier Gold. Interpreti principali : Michele, padrone del barcone, 50 anni Ambrogio Maestri Luigi, scaricatore, 20 anni Rubens Pelizzari Il Tinca, scaricatore, 35 anni Marco Ciaponi, Matteo Desole Il Talpa, scaricatore, 55 anni Alessandro Spina Giorgetta, moglie di Michele, 25 anni Anna Pirozzi La Frugola, moglie del Talpa, 50 anni Annamaria Chiuri.

Giuseppe Baroni, the conductor here, shows the same affinity for Puccini as Alfredo Simonetto on the other set. True, this time the big names of Giuseppe Taddei, Fernando Corena and Franco Calabrese are missing, but the sense of true Puccini drama is everywhere apparent throughout Tabarro’s grisly tale. The sound is of its period. I take this to be a radio studio recording, and it is rather dry.
