Elsewhere, the a cappella chorus of "Magnificat" shines with vocals that embrace the church walls with chills and crispness, like a beam of moonlight through winter. One of the composer's strengths has always been to find the depth in simplicity. To this end, ever-present ECM producer Manfred Eicher's sparse and beautiful sensibilities fit Arvo Pärt like a glove, especially with "Silouans Song," which blossoms in stoic waves of strings. The compositions in Te Deum may not reveal Pärt's more eclectic and thunderous side, but few other albums carry such a consistent theme.

Te Deum" opens patiently and ominously, then proceeds to run the spectrum between overflowing swells and hushed contemplation. The Tallinn Chamber Orchestra and the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir breathe as one under the magnificent direction of Tönu Kaljuste for this and "Berliner Messe," the closing mass that parts the clouds with its stark beauty and pious rejoicing (the third passage within the mass, "Erster Alleluiavers," is a brief teardrop of reverence that even atheists would ponder). Elsewhere, the a cappella chorus of "Magnificat" shines.

Berliner Messe (or Berlin Mass) is a mass setting by Estonian composer Arvo Pärt. Commissioned for the 90th Katholikentag in Berlin in 1990, it was originally scored for SATB soloists and organ. It was first performed at St. Hedwig's Cathedral on 24 May 1990, the Feast of the Ascension, with Paul Hillier conducting the Theatre of Voices. Pärt later (1997) revised the piece for chorus and string orchestra.

Berliner Messe: Agnus Dei. Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir Tallin Chamber Orchestra. Tonu Kaijuste - director. Pärt's Berliner Messe can lay some claim to being the composer's finest work - at the very least, it provides yet more evidence that Pärt should be recognized as a great composer. As for the shorter works, Silouans Song is a five-and-a-half minute piece for strings, and not among Pärt's stronger works - the basic idea is not particularly strong, and when subjected to Pärt's spare treatment it is rather crucial that the basic idea is a good one; indeed, the main danger of Pärt's approach (a danger he generally. avoids) is that the music sounds samey, and in the case of Silouans Song the problem is exactly that it sounds like most of his other recent works, only less compelling. The a cappella Magnificat, however, is superb.

Berliner Messe: Zweiter Alleluiavers. 8. Berliner Messe: Veni Sancte Spiritus. Stylistically all the works on this disc exhibit the hallmarks of the composer's "tintinnabulistic" style - plainchant-like melodies centered around a tone (and triadic harmonies based around the tone), mildly dissonant and pared down often to an absolute minimum with respect to ornaments, yet with masterly woven textures, and often being thoroughly mesmerizing and easily able to sustain the. This is a wonderful album, filled with beautiful, highly expressive, interesting, superbly performed modern choral (somewhat minimalist) music. No fluff here - just great music with plenty to say, albeit, quietly.
