If you want to embrace a roots-friendly country rock sound that harkens back to the 1970s, you can't fault the Deep Vibration for striving to get the details right. Based out of Nashville, the Deep Vibration's debut EP Veracruz includes some impressive and appropriate guests - Al Perkins, who's played pedal steel with everyone from Gram Parsons to Dwight Yoakam, adds his licks to two songs, while legendary songwriter and keyboard man Spooner Oldham tickles the ivories on four cuts, and Gillian Welch contributes lovely harmonies to the closer, "Tennessee Rose.

That said, it’s obvious that these guys are influenced by the classics. However, the sound seems to fall right into their lap and they achieve it without coming across as trying to hard or simply imitating (Panic At The Disco), as heard in their current EP, Veracruz. The quavering vocals offered by lead singer, Matt Campbell, are sung through a Shure SM-57 microphone and they parallel a toddler learning to walk; strong and confident one minute while beat down and.

Thanks to You. The Deep Vibration.

Third Day of July, 03:52. Tennessee Rose, 06:00.

The Deep Vibration has strip-mined the music of country-rock pioneers and sculpted a sound that's both fresh and familiar. The quartet's excellent five-track debut EP Veracruz infuses their clutch of world-weary tales about barbed romance and cheatin' hearts with bursts of Memphis horns ("Thanks to You"), explosive drum runs, '60s girl-group percussion ("Mississippi Women") and dueling guitars, while Matt Campbell's soulful country vocals - think two parts Neil Young to one part Gram Parsons - lassos the numbers. in an anguished rootsy warmth.
